Ninja Kitchen, a startup that specializes in cooking food for troops, is getting into the US Army’s procurement process by raising $50,000 in seed funding from a group of investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Andreessen Horowitz.
Ninja Kitchen has already been in the US government’s procurement pipeline for years, and the startup’s recent funding is an indication of the interest that the US is showing in its own food products.
As of April 30, the company had raised $7.2 million, of which $5.9 million was from the US Government.
It plans to use the $50 million in seed money to invest in further commercialization and expand its production capacity.
It also plans to take on more contracts for its products, which include cookware and appliances.

The company was founded by two former Army cooks, who previously worked at The Greenbrier restaurant chain.
Ninja has been able to raise a lot of money in the past due to its popularity and focus on cooking.
“Our mission statement is really focused on the people who cook, so we want to focus on those things and make the food we want for them,” the founders wrote on their website.
The founder of Ninja, Scott Waugh, says that his team wants to focus the company on the Army’s military needs.

“When we came up with the idea of Ninja in 2012, we really thought, well, let’s just do it,” said Scott Wain, the founder of the startup.

He pointed to a number of logistical problems, including how to set up and secure the kitchen in a facility with so many people.
The main problem was that the kitchen needed to be able to serve more than one person.
“There’s a whole bunch of logistical stuff that goes into getting a military kitchen ready to do what they need it to do.
And so it’s a lot harder to do it than it should be,” Wain told Business Today.
Wain also pointed out that there is a huge amount of training and education that goes on for military cooks, which could take years to get right.
“It’s not going to be easy to do this.
I mean, it’s very difficult,” he said.

When does the Army want to get involved?
The Army has not officially announced a timetable for a new kitchen, but the idea is definitely not a new one.
